“A Plague of Monsters”

A city under siege makes for one gripping January 1980 cover, as Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Batman, and Superman are overwhelmed by a snarling pack of monstrous creatures on the steps of what appears to be a city building. A red-and-yellow costumed figure looms above them, warning "The city is doomed!" — setting the ominous stage for "A Plague of Monsters." Dick Dillin and Dick Giordano deliver a wonderfully chaotic scene that captures the JLA at their most embattled, with the World's Greatest Superheroes looking genuinely outmatched for once.
