“The Weirder Side of the News”

Poor Betty — the cover of this March 1988 Archie Series issue says it all: she's been tied up with rope by a pint-sized, combat-gear-wearing kid, sprayed with what appears to be whipped cream, while a gleeful dark-haired girl looks on and a small dog adds to the delightful mayhem. Archie leans in through the window to deliver the punchline — Betty wonders aloud what she ever did to Ethel to deserve this babysitting job — in a scene brought to life with Dan DeCarlo's warmly expressive pencils and inks. If you've ever had a rough day on the job, Betty and Me #165 offers the cheerful comfort of knowing someone always has it worse.

While trying on a gorilla costume in a costume shop, Archie spots a traffic control officer about to ticket his car. He runs out of the shop, still in costume, pursued by Betty, who is dressed as a jungle girl. The ensuing chaos caused when people spot him causes a traffic snarl and helps foil the getaway of two bank robbers.
