The collection includes the original short stories, the four-issue miniseries, and subsequent one-shots, featuring art by Jill Thompson and writing by Evan Dorkin. Crossovers with Hellboy and other Mignola-verse characters are also included, expanding the eerie, folklore-infused world of these animal investigators.
"Stray" from the Beasts of Burden Omnibus (2025, Dark Horse) brings together Dymphna, Orphan, the Getaway Kid, and a clever raccoon named Hoke in a haunting tale of past sins and impossible choices. Written by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer and illustrated in full by Jill Thompson—whose evocative art and bold inks shape every haunting page—this story unfolds in a quiet, eerie home where buried secrets rise. The cover, also by Thompson, captures the moment’s tension with its stark, expressive lines.
In "What the Cat Dragged In," Dymphna enlists Orphan, the Getaway Kid, and the clever raccoon Hoke to infiltrate her old home, a place steeped in secrets and sorrow. What they uncover is a haunting legacy—one where a demon conjured long ago has trapped not only Dymphna’s past but the lives of her lost children, Rachel and Tansy. The story unfolds with quiet dread and emotional weight, as old wounds surface and choices made in desperation ripple through the present.
In "The Presence of Others Part One," the apprentice Wise Dogs encounter a family of paranormal investigators drawn to Burden Hill by the same unsettling forces that have long shadowed the town. As the dogs navigate uneasy alliances and hidden truths, the line between the known and the unseen begins to blur.
In "Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men Part One," Miranda returns to the Wise Dog Society as they investigate a mysterious trap that’s ensnared a fire-breathing salamander. When Lundy drives off the beast, the team uncovers ancient glyphs on the trap—only to be attacked by goblins bearing the same markings, hinting at a deeper, darker connection.
