Beasts of Burden #3

Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson's supernatural pet-detective series continues with issue #3, subtitled "Something Whiskered This Way Comes" — and Jill Thompson's cover makes the promise of that title very clear. A tense, beautifully rendered orange tabby cat crouches low in a shadowy, rubble-strewn environment, back arched and mouth open in a hiss, while a dark, ominous shadow looms behind it suggesting something unseen and threatening. Thompson's watercolor artwork gives the scene a striking warmth-against-menace quality that perfectly captures the series' blend of the cozy and the creepy.
