The story follows an aging vigilante named Deacon Blackfire who amasses a fanatical army in the sewers of Gotham City, capturing and brainwashing Batman into serving his dark cause. A grim, psychological thriller that pushes Batman to his physical and mental limits, it stands as one of the more mature and horror-tinged tales from the late Bronze Age of comics.
In "Capture," Batman endures Deacon Blackfire’s twisted experiments, refusing to break as his captors grow desperate. When ordered to be executed in the bathing room, he escapes into the labyrinthine sewers, where Robin finds him seated atop a mound of corpses—silent, resolute, and utterly alone.
In "Escape," Batman and Robin fight their way through the flooded Gotham sewers, where Batman is haunted by a past trauma that clouds his judgment. As Deacon Blackfire’s army of homeless forces pushes back the National Guard and the city teeters on evacuation, the two heroes must navigate barricades, sniper fire, and their own unraveling resolve. When Robin reaches out for help, Batman snaps back to focus—only to make the devastating decision to leave Gotham behind, with Robin calling Alfred to pick them up and the city’s fate sealed.
In "Combat," Batman confronts the fanatic Deacon Blackfire, a man whose twisted faith turns his followers into a violent cult. As the two face off in Gotham, Batman must reckon with the true purpose of his crusade—not vengeance, but the battle against fear itself.
