“The Apocalypse Plague Contagion: Part One”

Part one of DC's 1996 "Contagion" crossover event kicks off here in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #48, subtitled "The Apocalypse Plague." Brian Stelfreeze's cover sets an immediately unsettling tone — a red-coated, hat-wearing figure faces Batman through what appears to be a window or door frame, with Batman gripping the stranger's collar in a tense, confrontational exchange, all framed by a border of anguished, skull-like faces that hint at the plague-ridden chaos to come. Writer Alan Grant and artist Vince Giarrano bring this opening chapter to life, and if Stelfreeze's moody cover is any indication, Gotham is in for something genuinely grim.
