Part one of DC's 1996 "Contagion" crossover event kicks off here in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #48, subtitled "The Apocalypse Plague." Brian Stelfreeze's cover sets an immediately unsettling tone — a red-coated, hat-wearing figure faces Batman through what appears to be a window or door frame, with Batman gripping the stranger's collar in a tense, confrontational exchange, all framed by a border of anguished, skull-like faces that hint at the plague-ridden chaos to come.
