Batman Annual #1 holds a foundational place in DC's publishing history as the first giant-sized Batman reprint collection, arriving at a moment when the Silver Age was still finding its footing. Subtitled '1,001 Secrets of Batman and Robin,' the 84-page issue assembled a curated encyclopedia of Bat-mythology — the origin of the Batcave, the history of Batman's specialized costumes, the story of the Bat-Signal, the Dynamic Duo's most memorable escapes and gadgets — giving early-1960s readers a single definitive reference for everything that made Batman Batman. DC's own Senior VP Richard Bruning later called these early Annuals 'the first DC collected editions,' making this issue a true ancestor of the modern trade paperback and hardcover reprint program. It also helped prove the commercial viability of the 84-to-80-page giant format, directly paving the way for DC's formal 80-Page Giant line launched in 1964.
In "How to Be the Batman!", Batman and Robin are whisked back 300 years by Professor Nicholls, landing in a frontier world where they meet Jeremy Coe, a daring spy with ties to the Red Indians. With the help of Colonial-era versions of their gadgets and a hidden cavern that will one day become the Bat-Cave, the Dynamic Duo team up to outwit a band of outlaws. Written by Bill Finger and illustrated by Sheldon Moldoff, with inks by Charles Paris, this 1961 annual features a cover by Curt Swan, Sheldon Moldoff, and Dick Sprang.
In "How to Be the Batman!", a mysterious amnesia gas leaves Batman with no memory of his crimefighting past—leaving Robin to guide him through the basics of being Gotham’s Dark Knight. With the antidote failing, the dynamic duo must relearn their partnership, one vigilante lesson at a time.
In "The Strange Costumes of Batman!", Bruce and Dick conduct a routine check of the Bat-Cave's arsenal, inspecting the various costumes worn by Batman and Robin for damage. When a new, untested suit proves crucial in saving Batman after a serious injury, the team is left wondering what other surprises the cave might hold.
When reporter Dave Purdy uses the Bat-Signal to outwit a killer, he inadvertently becomes part of Gotham’s legend—though the real hero remains in the shadows, quietly applauding the clever twist of fate.
When the microfilm containing Batman's electronic crime file vanishes from the Bat-Cave, the Dark Knight and Robin must race to recover it before the stolen data falls into the wrong hands—giving criminals a dangerous advantage in their next moves.
In "Thrilling Escapes of Batman and Robin!", the Dynamic Duo finds themselves trapped by the cunning villain Paul King, who devises a fiendish prison tailored to Robin’s past escapes—testing their wits and teamwork in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

Following the commercial success of the Superman Annual program that began in 1960, DC editor Jack Schiff — who had overseen the Batman titles since 1942 — assembled this inaugural Batman Annual, which hit newsstands on June 29, 1961, with an August cover date. Schiff was uniquely suited to curate the content because he had edited the original Detective Comics and Batman stories being reprinted, lending the selection a coherent editorial vision rather than a random grab-bag quality. Associate editors Murray Boltinoff and George Kashdan assisted on the issue, published under DC's formal legal name, National Comics Publications Inc. The cover itself was a collaborative production featuring work by Curt Swan, Sheldon Moldoff, Dick Sprang, and Charles Paris.
