Azrael: Agent of the Bat #72

The concluding chapter of the "Prophet" trilogy arrives in this January 2001 issue, and the cover by Tony Harris and Ray Snyder makes a striking impression — Azrael's masked face looms large and intense in the upper half, while a wild-haired, ragged figure reaches upward beneath him, flanked by a lit candle and a cloaked, skull-adorned figure lurking in the lower left corner. The collision of religious imagery, flickering flame, and geometric color blocks gives the composition an almost ritualistic weight that feels perfectly suited to a story wrestling with prophecy and faith. Dennis O'Neil, Sergio Cariello, and James Pascoe close out this arc with a creative team that clearly relishes the darker, more mythic side of the Batman universe.
