The series was announced as a deliberate spin-off from Jed MacKay's ongoing Avengers title and the 'Blood Hunt' crossover event, with writer Steve Orlando citing West Coast Avengers — the first comic he ever purchased — as a spiritual template for the 'return to the Mansion' premise and the focus on a large, rotating cast of classic and obscure Avengers. Avengers Assemble Vol. 3 was deliberately planned as a five-issue limited series rather than an ongoing, a decision editors made consciously to avoid the fate of comparably scoped titles (such as Avengers Inc.) that had been retroactively capped at similar issue counts. Each of the five issues featured a different interior penciler — Cory Smith handled the debut, with Marcelo Ferreira, José Luis Soares Pinto, and others rotating in — described by one reviewer as a try-out structure that spread work across multiple artists.
