About this Issue

Avengers Assemble (Vol. 3) #4 is a pivotal chapter in the five-issue miniseries that formally established the AVENG.E.R.S. — Captain America's Avengers Emergency Response Squad — as a credible, morally complex rapid-response team rather than a second-string backup unit. The issue reintroduces Victorious (Zora Vukovic), Doom's Power Cosmic–wielding herald, in a meaningful post-Blood Hunt context and uses her conflict with She-Hulk's splinter team to dramatize the wider consequences of Doom's seizure of the Sorcerer Supreme mantle — narrative threads that would ripple through subsequent Marvel event titles. The issue also advances the series' running argument that 'classic' Avengers storytelling — self-contained missions, interpersonal texture, and ensemble character work — remains viable inside a heavily event-driven publishing line.

History

The series was announced in June 2024 as a direct spinoff of Jed MacKay's ongoing Avengers run and the Blood Hunt crossover event, with writer Steve Orlando — coming off his well-regarded Scarlet Witch run — chosen to helm it. Orlando structured the book around a deliberate anthology-style format, enlisting a rotating roster of artists (Cory Smith, Scot Eaton, Marcelo Ferreira, and Valentina Pinti across the five issues) so that each chapter could carry its own visual identity while colorist Sonia Oback provided visual continuity throughout the run. Orlando has stated publicly that real-world disaster-relief work he performed alongside World Central Kitchen directly shaped the AVENG.E.R.S. concept — including the practical reasoning behind the team's matching leather jackets as instant field-identification gear — giving the series an unusually grounded creative rationale for what might otherwise read as nostalgia. The miniseries was edited by Alanna Smith under editor-in-chief C. B. Cebulski, and proved successful enough that its AVENG.E.R.S. concept continued in the subsequent Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic (2025).

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Release date: December 4, 2024; cover-dated February 2025. It is issue 4 of a 5-issue limited series (Vol. 3).
  • Written by Steve Orlando; pencils and inks by Valentina Pinti; colors by Sonia Oback with assists from Fer Sifuentes-Sujo; letters by VC Cory Petit; main cover by Leinil Francis Yu with colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr.
  • Two variant covers were published alongside the main issue: a Rickie Yagawa 'Avengers Jacket' variant and a Lucas Werneck 'Stormbreakers' variant.
  • The issue centers on Victorious (Zora Vukovic) — Doom's herald, who wields a version of the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic — being found stranded outside Doom's magically sealed Latverian border, and She-Hulk leading a team to contain and question her.
  • A parallel subplot advances the Serpent Society arc: Pit Viper, revealed as the Society's current leader, uses artifacts stolen across earlier issues to assemble a poison called the 'Serpent's Tears,' dedicated to Mephisto, with Captain America absorbing its effects at the issue's cliffhanger.
  • The series spins directly out of the Blood Hunt (2024) crossover event, in which Doctor Doom gained the power of the Sorcerer Supreme and sealed Latveria behind a mystical barrier — geopolitical fallout that provides the issue's central dramatic premise.
  • The broader miniseries deliberately revived the 1990s-era Avengers leather-jacket aesthetic and relocated the team to Avengers Mansion; Orlando has cited West Coast Avengers as a personal touchstone, and his real-world volunteer disaster-relief work as the conceptual basis for the rapid-response team structure.
  • The AVENG.E.R.S. concept introduced across this miniseries proved durable enough to anchor the follow-on Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic (2025), which continued Orlando's tenure with the same rotating-roster premise.
