History

Marvel announced the series in September 2012 for a December 2012 cover date, pairing writer Dennis Hopeless — then still early in his Marvel career after Legion of Monsters and X-Men: Season One — with artist Kev Walker, who had previously drawn Thunderbolts. The series launched as part of the sweeping Marvel NOW! initiative, a company-wide relaunch intended to make titles accessible to new readers, and Hopeless and Walker created the Braddock Academy and its students — Kid Briton, Apex, Anachronism, Nara, and Cullen Bloodstone — from scratch specifically for the book, while Death Locket was conceived as a teenage, female riff on the Deathlok concept. The first issue's cover was a deliberate homage to the poster art for the Japanese film Battle Royale, and subsequent covers paid tribute to Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games, leaning into the series' acknowledged intertextual DNA rather than hiding it.

• The complete 18-issue series was collected in Avengers Arena: The Complete Collection (TPB, 408 pages, 2018) and was followed by a direct sequel series, Avengers Undercover, in which surviving characters infiltrate the Masters of Evil.
• Dennis Hopeless won the 2013 Harvey Award for Most Promising New Talent on the strength of this series.
• The cover of issue #1 is a homage to the Japanese film Battle Royale; subsequent covers in the run homaged The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies.
