History

Christos Gage developed the concept while writing Avengers: The Initiative, the title Avengers Academy directly succeeded in Marvel's publishing schedule, and he has noted that the core idea — a voluntary school to replace the Initiative's compulsory military model — emerged from conversations with co-writer Dan Slott, who may also have coined the 'Avengers Academy' name. Marvel announced the series in March 2010 via a teaser campaign that revealed the student roster one character at a time, with Veil unveiled first and Mettle initially listed under the working name 'Fortress.' The issue was edited by Bill Rosemann with colors by Jeromy Cox, and the editorial brain trust at a Marvel summit — including Ed Brubaker, Brian Bendis, Matt Fraction, and Joe Quesada — contributed key story refinements, including the elegant solution of having the students discover their true psychological profiles by hacking the Avengers' own computers.
