“Dog Days”

Alex Ross's cover for this December 2017 Vertigo issue leads with an absolutely irresistible image: a caped corgi in a yellow super-suit soaring straight toward the viewer against a bright blue sky, with a barking beagle and a glowing spectral cat visible behind it, all accompanied by a costumed monkey pilot riding what appears to be a rocket-powered vehicle — and a black-and-white cat wearing a sheriff's badge rounding out the aerial ensemble. "Dog Days" promises that Kurt Busiek and Mike Norton are leaning fully into Astro City's gift for finding the extraordinary in unexpected corners, and this particular corner involves super-powered pets. It's warm, playful, and just a little bit glorious.
