“An Ember Glows...”

The third chapter of this 1996 Marvel "All New X-Men Special Event" puts young Cable front and center in a vivid, kinetic cover by Gene Ha and Andrew Pepoy — the bare-chested, goggled youth straining against thick rope bonds while blasting free with what appears to be a glowing weapon, surrounded by massive curved red claws or branches and a scattered skull at his feet. Scott Lobdell, Jeph Loeb, and Gene Ha continue "An Ember Glows..." with all the raw, far-future intensity the series has promised, and this image of a defiant young warrior fighting his way out of a trap makes a genuinely compelling case for picking up the issue.

Nathan makes his way to Ebonshire and rescues a pirate woman from the deadly Daegon, little knowing that she is one of his greatest enemies, Straitor Umbridge, in disguise. Nate meets Askani Sister, Aliya, and impresses her with his battle prowess when a nest of giant insects attack. He is taken to meet insane Clan Mother, Sanctity, who proclaims him to be both savior and Askani' Son, even though no male has ever been permitted to be trained in the ways of the Clan.
