“Paid In Fool”

In "Paid In Fool," Reggie’s scheme to sneak in on a dance with Veronica backfires when she’s sick, forcing Jughead to step in as her proxy—much to Reggie’s panic. With Moose closing in and his lies unraveling, Reggie tries to cover his tracks by paying Jughead to pretend he’s the real date. Written by Tom Moore and illustrated by Samm Schwartz, this 1958 classic captures the chaos of teenage deception with a 10-cent dose of humor and heart. The cover by Harry Lucey perfectly captures the moment’s escalating absurdity.

Reggie gets the coach to send Archie to a meeting as a proxy for him, so Reggie can take Archie's place with Veronica at a dance. But Veronica is sick, so Jughead chooses Midge to be her proxy for the dance. A terrified Reggie tries to explain to Moose that he's really just dating Midge as a proxy for Archie, and when that doesn't seem to work, he pays Jughead to be his proxy when Moose gets back.
