“The Outspoken Word”

In "The Outspoken Word," Veronica's sharp line between wealth and worth takes a surprising turn when she challenges herself to truly embrace the "unrich" lifestyle—prompted by Betty’s pointed observation that her friends aren’t actually poor, just not rich. With a mix of humor and self-awareness, the story explores class perceptions through a lighthearted yet thoughtful moment where Veronica seeks advice on how to act "poor" without actually being so. Written by Frank Doyle and brought to life with Dan DeCarlo’s signature style—pencils and inks by DeCarlo, colors by Barry Grossman, letters by Bill Yoshida—this 1976 issue captures the charm and wit that defined Archie’s Girls series.

Veronica's father wants her to mingle with the "unrich" (a word she uses because she can't bear to say "poor"). Betty reminds her that most of her friends are actually middle-class, but Veronica replies that "to me, anybody who isn't rich is poor." But when Betty informs her that the "unrich" wouldn't do things like use a twenty dollar bill as a bookmark, Veronica asks for advice on how to be truly "unrich."
