About this Issue

Archie #119 holds a permanent place in Archie Comics history as the debut issue of Miss Bernice Beazly, the perpetually cantankerous cafeteria cook of Riverdale High whose legendarily inedible food — relished only by Jughead — became a reliable engine of comedy for decades. Her arrival completed the core faculty ensemble at Riverdale High, rounding out a cast of adult foils that had been accumulating since the early 1940s. The issue also appeared during the creative peak of artist Harry Lucey, whose kinetic, body-language-driven slapstick defined the look and feel of the flagship Archie title in this era. Several of its stories have been reprinted repeatedly across the publisher's digest line, confirming their enduring appeal to generations of readers.

History

The issue went on sale March 16, 1961, edited by Richard H. Goldwater — son of co-founder John L. Goldwater — during a period when Harry Lucey served as the primary artist on the Archie title, penciling and inking the bulk of its stories throughout the late 1950s and into the mid-1970s. Lucey, a Pratt Institute graduate who had co-developed the visual language of the Archie characters alongside Bob Montana in the early 1940s, was at the height of his productivity at this stage; contemporaries noted he was producing approximately a page a day, effectively drawing the title's complete contents himself. The issue fell just a few numbers after the title was formally shortened from 'Archie Comics' to simply 'Archie' starting with issue #114.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Miss Bernice Beazly (also spelled Beazley), the sharp-tongued cafeteria cook of Riverdale High — confirmed across multiple Archie history sources as Archie #119, 1961.
  • On-sale date: March 16, 1961, per Library of Congress Copyright Office periodical records cited by the Grand Comics Database.
  • Edited by Richard H. Goldwater; primary interior artist was Harry Lucey, who served as the main penciler/inker on the Archie flagship title from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s.
  • The issue's cover was itself a redraw of the Laugh Comics #21 cover, and was later redrawn a second time for the cover of Jughead with Archie Digest #16.
  • Miss Beazly is introduced with her defining character traits intact: awful cooking universally mocked by students but eagerly consumed by Jughead, and a willingness to talk back to principal Mr. Weatherbee.
  • The issue contains a notable silent-pantomime Archie story ('Actions Speak Louder Than Words') with no character dialogue — only captions in the opening and closing panels — showcasing Lucey's mastery of visual comedy.
  • Stories from this issue have been reprinted in at least eight later publications, including Archie: The Best of Harry Lucey Vol. 2 (IDW, 2012), Archie's Pals 'n' Gals Double Digest #38 (1999) and #93 (2005), the Archie Digest Free Comic Book Day Edition (2014), and Archie Spotlight Digest: Archie 75th Anniversary Digest #8 (2017).
  • The Riverdale High faculty roster assembled across the era included characters debuting as far back as 1941 (Miss Grundy) and as recently as 1961 (Miss Beazly), making this issue the last major addition to that classic adult supporting cast.
