Arak / Son of Thunder #9
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeArak, Son of Thunder bursts dramatically through a massive crumbling skull on this striking 1982 DC cover — knife clenched in his teeth, axe in hand, whip coiled at his side, while enemy blades thrust up at him from below. The tagline "Adventure on the High Seas!" sets a bold, swashbuckling tone that matches Ernie Colón's dynamic cover art perfectly. With Roy Thomas writing and Ernie Colón on interior art as well, this issue promises the kind of sword-and-sorcery energy that made this series a standout in DC's early-'80s lineup.

Continuing their search for White Cathay, Arak and Valda manage to finagle a ride on Captain Montagu's ship. Montagu is loading oddly-shaped rocks, claimed from the ruins of Pompeii, into the hold of his ship, claiming they are to be used to build a temple. Later, after fending off pirates, Arak and Valda learn Montagu's villainous nature and are taken prisoner, and Arak is thrown into the hold with the rocks. But, it turns out the rocks contain the remains of Pompeii's people, and one of their high priests awakens and reanimates the corpses, who kill Montagu's crew and sink the ship.
