Arak / Son of Thunder #28
In "Guardian of the Golden Bough!", Arak, Satyricus, and Dyanna flee Byzantium only to face a new trial: a forbidden forest they’re warned to avoid. When Satyricus ignores the warning and drags two women into the woods, Arak follows their trail and stumbles upon a golden bough at the heart of the glade—only to be ambushed by a fierce priest claiming to serve Artemis. Written by Roy Thomas and Dann Thomas, with bold artwork by Ron Randall and vibrant colors by Adrienne Roy, this 1983 DC adventure blends myth and mystery in a story where destiny isn’t chosen—it’s claimed. The cover, also by Ron Randall, captures the moment of confrontation with striking intensity.

Arak, Satyricus and Dyanna have completed their escape from Byzantium. Upon departing, Dyanna warns the others not to enter the forbidden woods in the distance. However, while Arak visits a village for supplies, Satyricus (true to his nature) lures a couple of women right into the forbidden woods for a little fun. Later, Arak follows their tracks and finds a forest glade dominated by a golden bough. He's then attacked by a large man claiming to be the high priest of Artemis. When, Arak kills him, Dyanna and friends appear and announce Arak will now be the high priest for the rest of his life.
