Rafael Albuquerque's cover for this June 2015 Vertigo issue stops you cold: a snarling, fang-bared vampire creature — massive, ape-like, draped in a sweeping red cloak — fills the frame with feral menace, its glowing yellow eyes and outstretched claws radiating barely contained fury. Scott Snyder and Albuquerque's American Vampire: Second Cycle continues with "Dark Moon, Part 2," and this image alone makes clear the series hasn't lost any of its appetite for bold, unsettling horror. Dave McCaig's stark red-and-teal palette gives the whole thing an eerie, almost painterly charge that rewards a long look.
