“Interplanetary Love”

"Interplanetary Love" in Amazing Stories of Suspense #144 (1975) delivers a haunting, dreamlike encounter when a test pilot awakens to find a Viking and a young woman standing outside his cockpit—only to learn he’s in a realm where the recently deceased linger. Written by Joe Gill and illustrated with eerie precision by Steve Ditko—whose distinctive pencils and inks define both the story and the cover—this tale blurs the line between reality and the afterlife, leaving the pilot and a mysterious woman bound by a vision that may be more than just a memory.

A test pilot sees a viking sailor and a young woman standing outside his cockpit. He exits his plane to speak with them. The viking tells him that he has entered a "dreamer's world," where people like him end up when they die. The woman protests that she's not dead, and the pilot realizes that she must be in trouble in the real world. The pilot grabs her by the hand and the two of them make a break for the jet cockpit. Once he lands, she is nowhere in sight, but he finds her passed out in a room of dangerous smoldering chemicals. She revives and recognizes him as the man from her vision.
