“We Were Trapped in the Twilight World!”

In "We Were Trapped in the Twilight World!", a haunting tale from 1961, a young woman's cherished teddy bear becomes the center of a mysterious, unsettling event when her husband, a surveyor in a remote rocky region, returns to find the animal marked with strange scratches after a terrifying encounter with a mountain lion. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated with eerie precision by Steve Ditko—whose inks and coloring by Stan Goldberg heighten the story’s quiet dread—this early Marvel tale blends domestic intimacy with the uncanny. The cover, a striking piece by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers, captures the moment’s tension without revealing its secrets.

As a young girl, Carol had received a teddy bear that she kept by her side always. Her husband, Jim, is a surveyor, and is assigned to a rough rocky region for a short period. Jim spots some mountain lions tracks, and, gun in hand, goes off after the beast; however, the mountain lion knocks Jim aside, damaging his gun, and heads for the tent where Carol is asleep. When Jim reaches the tent the mountain lion is dead and the teddy bear has some inexplicable scratches on it. Jim no longer criticizes Carol for wanting to take the bear everywhere.
