Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1
This 2016 Marvel trade collects the opening arc of *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.*, written by Marc Guggenheim with interior art by Germán Peralta, and the cover by Mike Norton puts the team front and center — a determined squad of agents in matching S.H.I.E.L.D. uniforms charging forward alongside a winged hero and a woman in black, with a massive, looming white figure dominating the background. "The Coulson Protocols" signals that this is very much Phil Coulson's show, building the beloved agent's world into something bigger and more action-packed than ever. ComicVine called it a book that "bristles with energy and fun," and the cover makes a strong case for exactly that.

Coulson is captured by Grant Ward, who has been the man in the old Iron Man armor we've seen in previous issues. Deathlok learns that Jemma is dying of a disease. The team sets out to rescue Coulson. In Japan, an unknown man in the same armor as Grant Ward attacks and almost kills Spider-Man, until he is saved by Mockingbird and May. Grant Ward reveals to Hydra that he has an army of Iron Men who all have the Coulson protocols built-in. In flashback, we see Ward, as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., going undercover in Hydra, and being turned.
