Superman strains with raw, gritted-teeth determination as he tears apart a massive pipe system, water exploding in all directions around him — and a lurking green creature visible at the lower left hints at what's waiting for him underground. The tagline "Hell Below!" sets a foreboding tone for this 1987 annual, which brings together writer Jim Starlin, penciler Dan Jurgens, and inker Steve Montano for a story titled "The Union."
