“That Healing Touch, Part 1”

This December 2004 issue opens the "That Healing Touch" storyline with a genuinely unsettling cover by Gene Ha — Superman's civilian clothes are being torn open to reveal his iconic costume beneath, while multiple grasping hands claw at him from all sides and his face contorts in an agonized, monstrous scream, all punctuated by the word "Parasites!" splashed across the image. The effect is visceral and disquieting, suggesting the Man of Steel is under a very different kind of threat than a typical fistfight. With Greg Rucka writing and Matthew Clark on interior art, this creative team brings a moody, grounded sensibility to one of DC's longest-running Superman titles.
