Absolute Batman #7 is the debut installment of the 'Absolute Zero' arc and serves as the first appearance of both the Absolute Universe versions of Mr. Freeze and the Joker — two of Batman's most enduring adversaries reimagined from the ground up for DC's alternate-continuity imprint. Rather than recycling Paul Dini's beloved tragic-scientist template for Victor Fries, Scott Snyder and guest artist Marcos Martín introduce a wholly original variant: Victor Fries Jr., the son of the classic characters, who has been warped by cryotherapy into something monstrous, pivoting the character's emotional core from grief-fueled obsession to body-horror nightmare. The issue also marks a deliberate tonal shift in the series — moving from the kinetic action-movie energy of the first arc into slower, dread-soaked detective storytelling — demonstrating that the Absolute Batman title could sustain meaningful creative range beyond its blockbuster opening. As part of the DC 'All In' initiative's most commercially and critically prominent title, this issue carries the additional weight of expanding the Absolute Universe's rogues gallery for the first time.

History

Absolute Batman was conceived by writer Scott Snyder as the flagship title of DC's Absolute Universe imprint, itself launched under the umbrella of the 2024 'DC All In' initiative. Snyder, who had stepped away from DC in 2020, agreed to return on the condition that Nick Dragotta — his co-creator on Image's East of West — would serve as the series' primary artist; Snyder has publicly stated he would not have taken the project without Dragotta's involvement. For issue #7, Dragotta stepped back after completing the six-issue opening arc 'The Zoo,' and Snyder brought in guest artist Marcos Martín — known for acclaimed runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Daredevil at Marvel alongside colorist Muntsa Vicente — to helm the two-part 'Absolute Zero' interlude. Snyder had telegraphed the arc's existence publicly before the series launched, describing it as a deliberate two-issue breathing space between the first and second major story arcs.
