About this Issue

Absolute Batman #6 closes 'The Zoo,' the six-issue inaugural arc of one of the most commercially and critically discussed Batman runs in recent memory — a series that brought a radically working-class, wealth-stripped Bruce Wayne to readers for the first time within DC's Absolute Universe imprint. The issue delivers a pivotal identity-reveal moment: Bruce discloses to his childhood friends — Waylon Jones, Edward Nygma, Harvey Dent, Oswald Cobblepot, and others — that he is Batman, a narrative turning point that reshapes the entire emotional architecture of the ongoing series. It also plants the first narrative seed for Bane's arrival in the Absolute Universe, functioning as both a satisfying arc finale and a structural bridge to what follows. As the capstone issue of the first collected volume, it holds a durable structural role in the reading history of this run.

History

Absolute Batman was conceived by Scott Snyder as the flagship title of DC's Absolute Universe imprint, launched in October 2024 under the 'DC All In' initiative. Snyder had initially planned a consulting role on the imprint but was persuaded by writer James Tynion IV to take on the Batman book himself, agreeing only on the condition that Nick Dragotta — known for his Image Comics series East of West with Jonathan Hickman — serve as artist. The two collaborated in a hybrid Marvel-style working method, with Snyder providing broad story beats and Dragotta retaining significant visual latitude; both creators confirmed in a post-issue-six interview that the identity-reveal scene with Waylon Jones was accelerated from its originally planned position because the moment felt organically earned at that juncture. Colorist Frank Martin and letterer Clayton Cowles rounded out the core creative team throughout the first arc.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published March 19, 2025 (cover-dated May 2025); part of DC's Absolute Universe/'DC All In' initiative launched October 2024.
  • Written by Scott Snyder; art by Nick Dragotta; colors by Frank Martin; letters by Clayton Cowles — the full creative team of the first arc.
  • Concludes the six-part inaugural story arc titled 'The Zoo,' in which Roman Sionis / Black Mask and his gang the Party Animals serve as the primary antagonists.
  • Bruce Wayne reveals his secret identity as Batman to his childhood friends — including Waylon Jones, Edward Nygma, Harvey Dent, and Oswald Cobblepot — marking a decisive break from the classic Batman-as-lone-secret-keeper formula.
  • Contains the 2nd cameo appearance of the Absolute Universe Joker (his first cameo was in Absolute Batman #1); the Joker is reimagined as a billionaire rather than a criminal clown.
  • First mention of Bane in the Absolute Universe: the Joker, shown undergoing a mysterious procedure, instructs an assistant to 'get Bane,' functioning as a direct setup for the second arc.
  • The issue also features a pivotal scene for Absolute Alfred Pennyworth — reimagined as an MI6 special agent rather than a butler — who rescues an unconscious Batman from the sea using a submerged Batmobile, cementing their partnership.
  • Collected in Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo (paperback ISBN 978-1799505259), which reprints issues #1–6; the hardcover edition was released August 2025 and also features guest art by Gabriel Walta from within the arc.
