2000 AD #956

This September 1995 prog of Britain's beloved weekly anthology puts the ferocious Celtic warrior Sláine front and center, lunging toward the viewer with blade raised and a massive wolf-fur cloak billowing behind him as fallen armored foes and chains litter the battlefield around him. The cover tagline "Chop 'Til You Drop!" perfectly captures the raw, kinetic energy that Greg Staples renders with such visceral confidence in both pencils and inks. Rounding out the issue is the promise of a new thrill in Maniac 5, making Prog #956 a fine snapshot of 2000 AD firing on all cylinders in the mid-nineties.
