“The Ape Gang”

Prog 39 of 2000 AD (19 November 1977) delivers one of the anthology's cheekiest covers, with cover art by Brett Ewins and Brendan McCarthy: an angry alien in a space helmet bursts right out of a drawing board to shove a ray gun in the face of a startled human artist, bellowing "Get it through your thick skull, Earthman… we DON'T have pointed ears!" It's a wonderfully self-aware gag that captures the irreverent wit the Galaxy's Greatest Comic was already making its trademark. Inside, John Wagner and Mike McMahon continue "The Ape Gang," promising the kind of sharp, anarchic storytelling that made 1977 a thrilling year for British comics.
