Brett Ewins
1955–2015
Brett Ewins (1955 – 16 February 2015) was a British comic book artist best known for his kinetic, punk-inflected work on *Judge Dredd* and *Rogue Trooper* in the pages of *2000 AD*. Born in 1955, he entered the industry in the early 1970s, quickly establishing himself with a raw, expressive style that suited the anthology’s anarchic energy. He is most celebrated for co-creating the series *Bad Company* with writer John Wagner, a gritty war saga that became a fan favorite. Ewins also collaborated with writer Peter Milligan on the surreal *Skreemer*, a post-apocalyptic crime epic that showcased his willingness to push narrative and visual boundaries. His work often featured dense, moody inks and a loose, almost improvisational line that gave his characters a lived-in, visceral quality. Beyond his own art, Ewins co-founded the influential British comics magazine *Deadline* in 1988, providing a platform for emerging talent. He remained active in the industry until his death in 2015, leaving behind a legacy as a key architect of the British comics boom of the 1980s. His contributions were recognized with a posthumous nomination for the Eisner Award, cementing his place as a vital, idiosyncratic voice in the medium.
