What you’re looking at

This page collects brief rural humor pieces typical of 1920s American satirical magazines. The content relies on period stereotypes: **"The Corn Was In the Colonel"**: A joke playing on a Kentucky Colonel's heavy drinking—the punchline suggests both the Colonel and mosquitoes are so drunk neither notices the other. **Crooked Fence anecdote**: Simple farmyard absurdist humor about a geometrically impossible fence. **"Crap Shootin' Blues"**: References gambling (craps), poverty, and family hardship in dialect, reflecting African American vernacular humor of the era. **"Warm Weather Stuff"**: A brief commentary on modern courtship—a "sheik" (1920s slang for a seductive man) stops his car under moonlight, but romance lacks excitement ("kick"). **Final joke**: A pun about ferries and fairy tales—pure wordplay. The page reflects early 20th-century rural Americana humor, using dialect humor and gentle satire about farming life, drinking culture, gambling, and modern dating customs.
