Clark held his fire. ““Drop it—or I let the dame have it!” Slug Nixon warned. Clark hesitated. He knew if he dropped the gun, it would mean in- stant death for him. Then he saw the wide, fearful eyes of the actress, de- cided he could do nothing else. But Doris was not as frightened as she seemed. She was an actress first, and in many a play had the script held a similar situation for her. Be- fore Clark could throw down his gun, as Doris knew he would, she acted. Both her tiny feet stomped with all her frail strength on the gangster’s toes. It was enough. Slug let out an oath, involuntarily loosed his grip for a second. Doris squirmed away. At once Clark cut loose, even as Slug pulled trigger. Unhurt, Clark got up, viewed for a moment the two dead men. Then he put down the guns, grasped the ac- tress by the arm and dashed for the fire escape. If she had come up that way, She could go down that way, for the front hall would likely be alive with police in a moment. It was nine o’clock when Clark and the actress pulled up in front of the Downtown Bank. At the vaults Clark removed his shoe, then his sock. And while Doris stared in amazement, the detective stripped off a piece of adhesive tape from the instep of his foot. The all- important key was on the adhesive. EVERAL minutes later, the pre- cious will recovered, the pair sped north to the Fordham court. They had less than an hour to make a trip that normally, under favorable conditions took an hour. And now conditions were unfavorable. Traffic was discouraging. “Step on it,” Clark begged the driver. “There’s fifty dollars in it for you if you make it in time!” Fifty bucks. The hackman pressed forward with superhuman effort. Please mention ACH FICTION Group when answering advertieements (C(O)/))/))\ |(C 0\(0)(6) (3 (G (0)
