# Page Analysis This is **story prose with integrated advertisements** from a pulp crime magazine. The left column continues a hardboiled detective narrative titled "Homicide Legacy" (page 109), depicting an armed confrontation where detective Clark uses a chair as cover during a shootout with gangsters Slug Nixon and Jim Hill over a missing key and a captive actress. The right side contains period advertising for patent medicines and consumer goods (Cystex kidney treatment, tailored suits, false teeth, and hair dye), typical of early-20th-century pulp magazine formatting.

——- + Clark addressed Lynch. “I’ll swap you the key for the lady’s freedom,” the detective bargained. He knew there wasn’t a chance of her going free while the last will of her million- aire husband reposed in the vault. His idea was merely to call attention to the fact he had the key, to distract his captors, even momentarily. Clark intended working on the cupidity of the hoodlums. He saw Slug Nixon cock his head alertly. “Say,” queried Nixon, with a covet- ous smirk on his hard face, “‘you got the key?” Clark’s grin was tantalizing. Slug advanced cautiously. The detective was sitting in a stout, overstuffed club chair. The glowering, beetle- browed Jim Hill was standing off a few paces with a gun in his hand. Slug sent a glance in his pal’s direc- tion. Hill was alert; it reassured Slug Nixon. He advanced again, stood directly in front of the detective, his gun outthrust, ready. “Better give me the key, detective,” he advised icily. “Accidents happen. This gun might go off before Lynch gets here.” The detective spread both arms along the back of his club chair. Sud- denly both feet shot up. He kicked the deadly weapon out of Slug’s hands. Upward and behind Clark it flew, while simultaneously the detective fell backward with the force of his effort. He purposely took the heavy chair with him, landing on all fours with the chair for a barricade. Instantly Hill shot a swift spray of lead toward the detective. The gangster’s bullets thudded in the thickly upholstered chair, ripping tufts of cotton batting out of it with savage force. But it failed to pene- trate, as Clark had expected. Now the detective had Slug Nixon’s automatic. He let loose a hurried tat- too that spun Hill around like a top, dropped him in a bleeding heap. Clark swerved the muzzle, poked it out from behind his effective barricade. But Slug had the actress in front of him, Please mention Acs Fiction Gaour when answering advertisements (2(0)/4)/\(C_O\O\(0)| KS.(CO) ——HOMICIDE LEGACY 109 Nervous, Weak, Ankles Swollen Excess acids, poisons and wastes in your blood are re moved chiefly by your kidneys, Getting up Nights, Burning Passages, Backache, Swollen Ankles, Nervousness, Rheu- matic Pains, Dizziness, Circles Under Eyes, and feeling worn out, often are caused by non-organic and non-sys- temie Kidney and Bladder troubles.
