Clark and the girl slammed out of the taxi, dashed up the steps. They burst into the solemn room a moment too late. The adventuress was there, Lynch at her elbow. The papers, signed and sealed, were in the woman’s hands as she walked up the aisle toward the street. Then Lynch saw the breathless Clark. He nudged his companion. The two stopped in their stride. The hoodlum looked about guiltily. Clark laughed. “Got you dead to rights, eh, Pete,” he bluffed. “‘She’s got the phony papers and you’re an accessory!’ Lynch showed uneasiness. The court attendants were beginning to take notice now. And Lynch had no idea how much truth was contained in the detective’s statement. He did the only natural thing a thug of his caliber could be expected to do under the circumstances. He pulled a gun in an endeavor to shoot his way out of what he considered a trap. Clark pulled his gun, also. But Lynch had the drop. With the gang- ster’s first shot, Clark fell. The .ad- venturess ran, her face bloodless but determined. Lynch was at her heels. But now a fusillade from the pistols of the guards and from police in the courtroom on department business mowed down the escaping killer. It cut down the fleeing adventuress also, since she swerved for a nearer exit in her frantic effort to be clear of the avenging fire—and plunged head-on into it as a result. For two weeks Doris Adair had been Clark’s daily and most welcome visitor.
