What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising and light satirical verse**, not political cartooning. The main content includes: **"From a Chicago Kid's Garden of Verses"** — Two humorous poems satirizing American society through a child's innocent voice: 1. The first poem jokes darkly about bank robbery as an appealing career, mocking both criminal audacity and the era's lawlessness (likely referencing Prohibition-era crime). 2. The second, "It Isn't a Pleasure Car," satirizes consumerism and social status—a wealthy car owner *complains* his vehicle works too well, denies him conversation topics at filling stations, and lacks mechanical problems to discuss. It mocks upper-class preoccupation with leisure complaints. **The advertisements** hawk period products: Resinol soap, Illinois watches, Forhan's toothpaste, and investment guides—typical Life magazine fare. The satire reflects 1920s anxieties: organized crime, consumer culture, and the artificial social rituals of the wealthy.

It Isn’t a Pleasure Car (THOUGH I have been fearing for some time that I have the wrong kind of car I have been putting up with it, thinking I might be too hard to please; but now I have decided to trade it in. Lots of drivers might think I have no cause for complaint; they are the fortunate ones who never had a machine like mine. For instance, my car goes almost twice as far as any other automo- bile on a gallon of any kind of fuel. It consumes almost no oil. It never seems to need water. The tires lose no air. So I am deprived of all con- versational pleasures with filling-sta- tion attendants. Where other car owners look forward to an agreeable ten minutes at the tanks, I merely stop, pay my money, and drive on. There is nothing for me to discuss. But the worst thing about the ma- chine is its quick starting in cold weather. No matter how low the mercury and no matter how long the motor has been standing, it starts in- stantly. It seems to start more read- ily in winter than in summer. So you see, when I am in conversation at the club or when friends drop in, I have nothing to complain about. When a man pays as much as I did for an automobile he has a right to service, so I'm going to give the dealer a chance to make good. If he can make this a conversation car I'll keep it; otherwise I’m going to change over to a make that acts normally and gives the owner a little pleasure. McCready Huston.
