What you’re looking at

This page mixes cruise ship advertising with satirical commentary on Hollywood publicity stunts. The main feature ridicules actor Sydney Chaplin (brother of Charlie) and his press agents for staging an elaborate photo of a trained seal ("Freddie") supposedly laughing while reading Life magazine. Life's editors mock this as the "oldest known form of publicity stunt"—fabricated celebrity endorsements. The joke: the seal isn't actually amused by the magazine; it's only looking at a fish held off-camera by a stage hand. The satire exposes how press agents manipulate images to create false advertising. The bottom comic cartoon, depicting working-class men in period dialect, appears unrelated to this feature. The article cleverly uses self-promotion—advertising Life's Travel Number that Chaplin holds—while simultaneously exposing the dishonesty of such promotional tactics.

What, you may well ask, was the object of all this effort? Obviously, the various press agents wanted to achieve a picture of a seal laughing at a copy of Lirr. Portraits of film stars perusing “their favorite litera- ture’ never fail to gain free advertising: this is the oldest known form of publicity stunt. In this case, the semblance of merriment on the seal’s countenance was achieved by a stage hand who stood out of range of the camera and held aloft a fish.
