What you’re looking at

This page satirizes three prominent scientists at the Rockefeller Institute in New York—Flexner, Carrel, and Noguchi—attacking them as fraudulent showmen rather than legitimate researchers. The satire's points: - **Dr. Flexner** invented an anti-meningitis serum that allegedly kills patients as surely as the disease itself; eight children died after receiving it in Cincinnati. - **Dr. Carrel** claimed he could transplant new organs and limbs but failed when tested in a hospital, managing only to preserve dead baby skin in ice. - **Noguchi** claims to have discovered the hydrophobia microbe, though the satire notes it was already identified multiple times by others. The author compares the Institute's self-promotion to circus theatrics (Barnum and Bailey), accusing Rockefeller of funding publicity stunts rather than genuine science. The piece mocks their European tours and grand announcements as marketing for "charlatan" medicine.

Flexner, Carrel and Noguchi! These three personages are the stars of the troup of the Rockefeller Institute in New York. This too celebrated establishment, which treats the things of science like the pickled pigs of Chicago, to an accompani- ment of furious beatings of the bass drum, is manifestly ambitious to replace the Barnum and Bailey Circus in its exhi- bitions designed to astonish the populace and to gather in the dollars. To this end, one member of the phe- nomenal trio goes to Europe periodically, preceded by much noise of his coming. IFFANY & 6) All honor to him (?) ° Dr. Simon Flexner, vivisector in chief of the Institute, is the inventor of the anti-meningitic serum which, according to some of the American doctors, kills the patient more surely than the disease itself. Eight children have recently died in a JEWELRY, SILVERWARE hospital in Cincinnati, paralyzed imme- diately after the injection of this serum. RESPECT Dr. Carrel is the phenomenal charlata who has stunned the universe in pro- claiming that he can put new organs and limbs in the place of old ones, for those who wish them. Put to the proof in the Broca hospital, he stammered_pitiably that he could do nothing of the sort; and it seemed as though his pretended miracles were reduced to preserving in ice the skin of a baby born dead.
