What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising and serialized fiction** rather than political satire. The dominant feature is a **Woodbury's Facial Soap advertisement** about reducing enlarged nose pores—a "conspicuous" beauty flaw. The text ironically invokes pseudo-scientific medical treatment involving hot water and repetitive lathering to strengthen "muscular fibres." Below that is a **Vir Publishing book advertisement** hawking instructional titles for various life stages ("What a Young Boy Ought to Know," etc.)—likely early sex-education or self-improvement guides sold through mail order. The page also continues serialized fiction called "In the Sunny South," describing a plot involving poisoners trading drinks. There are **no political cartoons** on this page. The small cartoon at bottom ("That fellow hasn't done a lick of work...") appears to be generic workplace humor, unrelated to current events. **Notable for modern readers:** Early 1900s advertising casually marketed questionable remedies and potentially exploitative "self-help" books to vulnerable audiences.

It means that he had been in the habit of taking a particular poison every day since he was a boy, beginning with a small dose, and gradually increasing it until his system was used to it and he could take a good long drink without any ill effects. In this way he could drink out of the same glass as the other man and be all right when the other man was cold. It is a useful thing to do, and is the natural result of centuries of civilization. The people in this country don’t practice fore- thought anything like so much as they might. “T don’t know whether you have ever heard that there are certain poisons that neutralize each other. It is so, anyhow, and when Marco, who had also ‘taken his poison" had slipped his white powder into the glass unobserved, the two poisons mixed, and the result was a beverage not half so deadly as the whisky they sell in this country. Risotto and Marco drank the loving cup together, with many ful- some compliments and good wishes for future happiness, and then sat quietly swapping anecdotes and waiting for the other one to die. “T dare say you have often kept a death-watch like that yourself.
