A translation of it appears in the Nelson Library of Uni- versal Literature, which is sold at one franc, twenty-five centimes per copy, and has a penetrating power which forces it into every small home in the land. I have not read the book, be- cause I have no time to read the classics while I am traveling, but every one tells me that Mr. Wendell’s great discovery is that the French are a humdrum and virtuous people, demure, chaste and innocent, and that their literature, or at least so much of it as depicts the life of pleasure, the society of easy morals or the Paris of our imagination—this literature has really been written by somebody else, and gives a false view of France. The real France is to be found in the homes of those people whom exchange professors are allowed to see, who live on the Isle de France and stump about carrying large envelopes in their hands. The truly French have nu- merous families (mostly girls), wear goggles, are serious persons and are not at all flighty in their domestic relations. The France of Barrett Wendell—I had heard and read of it, and it floated vaguely in the back of my mind as I stumbled happily about Paris. One becomes so fatigued in walking the streets of a foreign city, so over- done through the pleasures of thought and excitement, through new sensations and old ideas, that one sits down and lunches almost anywhere.
