This page is primarily **advertising** interspersed with editorial content on feminism. The dominant visuals are **product advertisements**: a Caille Portable Boat Motor (top left, showing leisure boating), Nuyler's Chocolates (top right), and other consumer goods. The substantive text is **"Life's Feminist Contest"** (continued from page 1030), which argues for women's **economic and social equality**. The article observes that women already work in factories, mills, and offices—performing labor previously monopolized by men—yet society resists granting them full legal rights and social recognition. The author (likely Belle Onry, bylined at bottom) critiques the contradictory logic that allows women's industrial labor while denying them equality, and attacks the notion that women pursuing vocations beyond housework threatens the home. The piece treats feminism as a practical response to existing economic conditions rather than abstract ideology. This reflects the **1910s-1920s American feminist debate** during women's suffrage activism, focusing on labor equality and legal recognition rather than purely domestic concerns.

City Life's Feminist Contest (Continued from page 1030.) home, for the very good reason that strong economic forces have already done so. The economic reason for placing women on an equal social foot- ing with men has been cited so often as to become commonplace, but it cannot lose its force. Whether we believe women should remain in the home or should perform labor in fac- tory, office and mill, the stubborn fact confronts us that women are not stay- ing at home; that they are found in every avenue of industrial activity. The Feminist movement looks at this situation fairly and squarely, and says, in effect: Here we have women doing work that has been heretofore monopo- lized by men. We have them assuming responsibilities and winning economic independence. We therefore declare that the privileges and rights that so- ciety grants to men be also allowed women; that they be given legal recog- nition and full social rights as human bein; It is strange with what equanimity we see laundry, mill and factory doing work previously done by women in their homeés; children of tender years going to kindergarten and school; but let women desire to follow some other vocation than that of general house- work, and, for some unknown reason, the foundations of home will crumble, and homes will totter and fall. The principal work of the woman in the home is not caring for children, but housework—the hardest and most ex- hausting of all labor, Labor has nothing to do with sex. The effort to keep women to sex functions and ad- ministering to the most primitive needs of humanity makes them merely instruments, means to an end—a most degrading condition. All social ac- tivities should be open to women. They are human beings as well as females, The special function of women, motherhood, requires a broad and vast experience. They are mothers of the race. Their children are children of society, and if they are to de- velop into good citizens, their mothers must be something more than the serv- ants of men. Belle Oury.
