There was a time when we might have surmised that Miss Carolyn Wells —jongleuse of joyous jingles—knew bet- ter, 100; but we begin to have our doubts. Some time ago the Scribners published a jolume of metrical parodies collected by Miss Wells, to which she contributed an original preface. This collection was seither so comprehensive nor discrimi- tating as one which had already issued from the press of Henry Holt, prefaced with a truly critical and sympathetic ac- ceant of metrical mimicry. Miss Wells’ compilation is doubtless better known, yet we could wish she had taken more ains with the introtuction, and had omitted some parodies of her own, which have no place in a book of reference xorth owning. The truth scems to be that few Ameri- can editors or publishers are intimately acquainted with the delicate art prac- tised by Calverley and Taylor. Or, since the appreciation of that art calls for a fastidious literary sense on the part of the reader, it may be that the editors and poblishers know their clientéle and are content with a provision of artificial earls.
