# Analysis of Life Magazine Page 165 **"A Philistine Canard"** critiques those who fault perfection itself, referencing Paderewski (likely the famous pianist/statesman) and his distinctive "human chrysanthemum" hairstyle. The satire defends eccentric genius against philistine criticism. **"A Comprehensive Reply"** shows a humorous teacher-student exchange about strength, with the student claiming Tommy (likely a boxer) was strongest, then asserting Ananias was stronger. The joke plays on Ananias as a biblical figure associated with lies. **"A Leap Year Incident"** depicts a domestic conversation where a wife proposes marriage to her husband. The exchange about watah (water) and whiskey appears to satirize Southern dialect and domestic attitudes. The three-panel cartoon below remains unclear without additional context about the tortoise cottage setting.

~BhE EB PHILISTINE CANARD. HERE are some people who would find fault with perfec- tion itself. We all know of the gentleman who, safely landed in Heaven, com- Hi plained because his halo didn’t fit. And now there be those who would put bitterness into the cup of i! the Paderewski worshipers. ‘These Philistines claim that the picturesque hair which has led to Mr. Paderews- ki’s being dubbed “the human chrys- anthemum,” is not his own, but is a product of the wig-maker. Lire holds that this statement is absurd on the face of it. Making full allowance for the eccentricity of genius, it is not for an instant to be believed that even a musician would deliberately handicap himself with such a top-knot as Paderews! Lire will maintain to the bitter end that Paderewski's hair is his misfortune, not his fault. A COMPREHENSIVE REPLY. “[ EeGHER : Who was the strongest man ? Tommy (who lives in “de Ate"): 1 recken Sampsen was the strongest in a fight; but I'll bet Ananias was the strongest with his party. Bludd, of Kentucky. “ Wall, may be so,” replied conservative Major Bowie. “It is truly, sah,” continued the Colonel. “Rain makes cawn, sah, an’ cawn makes whiskey.” TO SUPPORT A comicbooks.com
