What you’re looking at

This page from *Judge* magazine contains several satirical pieces mocking Victorian social conventions and domestic life: **"Language of Vegetables"** is a humorous parody of the popular "language of flowers"—a real Victorian custom where flowers conveyed coded romantic messages. The joke assigns cheeky vegetable meanings (potatoes saying "My eyes are upon you") to mock this overwrought sentimentality. **"A Young Housekeeper's Trials"** shows a woman who's fired nine servants in nine days, satirizing both the difficulty of domestic service and employers' unrealistic expectations. **"Old Saws Re-Set"** twists familiar proverbs with cynical commentary—"Fortune favors fools" because smart people "know they are too blamed smart to succeed." **"Hand-Painted Hair"** mocks the vanity of wearing artificial hairpieces marketed as natural-looking, requiring daily parting to maintain the deception. The cartoons ridicule Victorian pretension, social climbing, domestic incompetence, and vanity—common *Judge* targets of the era.
