Tonino Benacquista
Tonino Benacquista was born in Choisy-le-Roi, France, on 1 September 1961. A versatile storyteller, he is best known in comics for his work on the long-running Western series *Lucky Luke*, where he wrote several adventures between 2003 and 2021. Beyond the page, he gained wider recognition for his crime novel *Malavita* (published in English as *Badfellas* and later reissued as *The Family*), which was adapted into the 2013 film *The Family* starring Robert De Niro. Benacquista entered the arts as a crime fiction author before branching into screenwriting and comics, bringing a sharp, noir-inflected sensibility to his scripts. His *Lucky Luke* stories, drawn by various artists, are noted for their clever plotting and respect for Morris’s original character. He also wrote the series *Cœur Tam-Tam*, a more personal, rhythmic work. Benacquista’s contributions to French comics and crime literature have earned him a reputation as a deft, understated craftsman, though specific major awards are not widely cataloged in English-language sources. He continues to write across media, with his comics work remaining a significant part of his legacy.
