Stephen R. Bissette
Stephen R. Bissette was born on March 14, 1955, in Vermont, and became a defining voice in horror comics. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on DC Comics’ *Swamp Thing* during the 1980s, where he collaborated with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben. Together, they transformed the series into a dark, psychologically rich exploration of ecology and body horror, with Bissette’s lush, detailed art bringing the swamp and its monstrous protagonist to vivid life.
Bissette entered comics through fandom and self-publishing, later co-creating the acclaimed horror anthology *Taboo* and the series *1963* with Moore and others. His signature style blends meticulous linework with a visceral sense of decay and unease, influencing a generation of horror artists. Beyond *Swamp Thing*, he contributed to titles like *Spectral* and *Bog Swamp Demon*, and worked as a publisher, championing independent and underground voices.
Later in life, Bissette taught at the Center for Cartoon Studies and wrote about comics history. He received multiple Eisner Award nominations and remains a respected figure for his uncompromising vision and mentorship. His legacy endures in the dark, literate horror comics that followed.
