Solveig Muren Sanden
1918–2013
Born on 17 April 1918 in Vrådal, Kviteseid, Solveig Muren Sanden built one of the longest and most quietly distinguished careers in Norwegian comics history. She died on 23 November 2013, having contributed to the medium for more than eight decades.
Her connection to children's publishing began remarkably early: her first illustration appeared in the children's magazine *Norsk Barneblad* in 1932, when she was just fourteen. That publication would remain a central outlet throughout her working life, and the breadth of her credited work — spanning artist, colorist, inker, and letterer roles across more than 200 issues — speaks to the depth of her craft rather than mere prolificacy.
Muren Sanden is best remembered for two beloved comics series, *Tuss og Troll* and *Smørbukk*, both rooted in the warm, accessible storytelling tradition of Scandinavian children's literature. The affection Norwegians felt for *Smørbukk* in particular was made tangible in 2012, when sculptor Trygve Barstad unveiled a bronze figure of the character in her hometown of Vrådal.
Recognition from the wider industry came in 1973, when she became the inaugural recipient of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture's comics prize — an acknowledgment that placed her at the very foundation of how Norway formally honors the art form. Her legacy endures through work that continued to reach new readers long after her death.
