Roy Krenkel
Roy Gerald Krenkel, who signed his work RGK, was born July 11, 1918, and died February 24, 1983. An American illustrator, he brought a scholarly eye for historical detail and a painterly flair to fantasy and historical subjects across books, magazines, and comic books. His career in comics spanned from 1952 into the 2010s through reprints, with his most credited titles including *Vampus*, *Illustrierte Klassiker* (the German *Classics Illustrated*), *Eerie*, *Stjerneklassiker*, *The Rocket's Blast-Comicollector*, and *Billy Buckskin*. Krenkel is best remembered for his lush, atmospheric drawings and paintings that evoked ancient worlds and heroic fantasy, often in collaboration with writer and artist Al Williamson, with whom he shared a studio and a deep influence from illustrators like Frank Frazetta. He contributed significantly to the look of the *Classics Illustrated* line, bringing a distinctive, researched authenticity to its adaptations. Krenkel’s work, though not prolific in mainstream superhero comics, earned him a devoted following among fans of fantasy and historical illustration. His legacy endures in the pages of fanzines and archival collections, where his meticulous linework and rich compositions continue to be admired.
