Philippe Adamov
1956–2020
Philippe Adamov was a French cartoonist known for his richly detailed historical adventure comics, particularly the long-running series *Le vent des Dieux* (*Wind of the Gods*). He was born on 27 June 1956 and passed away on 3 February 2020. Adamov entered the comics field in the mid-1980s, bringing a painterly, atmospheric style to his work. His signature project, *Le vent des Dieux*, which he both wrote and illustrated, became his most celebrated creation, blending maritime history with swashbuckling fantasy. He also contributed to series such as *Im Schatten des Neumonds*, *Die Rote Kaiserin*, and *Le Avventure della Storia*, often collaborating with writers and colorists to realize his sweeping, period-driven narratives. Over a career spanning from 1985 into the 2020s, Adamov was credited as artist, colorist, inker, and writer on nearly 40 issues. His detailed linework and moody color palettes made him a distinctive voice in European bande dessinée. While specific major awards are not widely recorded in English-language sources, his work earned a devoted readership, particularly in France and Germany. Adamov’s legacy endures through his vivid, cinematic storytelling and the immersive worlds he built, influencing later historical adventure comics.
