Niels Søndergaard
Niels Søndergaard was born on 12 October 1947 in Denmark. He is best known as a prolific translator of science fiction, fantasy, and graphic novels, bringing major English-language works into Danish, including *Dune*, the Narnia saga, the Foundation series, the Earthsea trilogy, and Doris Lessing’s *Shikasta*. In comics, he translated *Calvin and Hobbes* and produced new translations of *Tintin*. As a writer, he created the original graphic novel *Superman: A Tale of Five Cities*, drawn and colored by Teddy Kristiansen; it was the first and only Superman story originally produced outside the United States. He also wrote the graphic novel series *Dimensionsdetektiven*, illustrated by Ole Comoll Christensen. Søndergaard and Christensen received the 1993 Pingprisen, a Danish award for graphic novels and comics. Over a career spanning from 1978 to 2021, he contributed to 143 issues as a letterer and writer, with notable credits including *Jeremiah*, *Lucky Luke*, *Franka*, *Tårnene i Maury-skoven*, *John Carter*, and *XIII*. His work remains significant for bridging Danish and international comics and literature.
