Ka-Zar #1 (1979) kicks off with the jungle lord uncovering a shocking secret in the war-torn land of New Britannia: the leaders, Heinrich Draco and Captain Christopher, are keeping the conflict alive not for their people, but for their own gain. Written by Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Niels Søndergaard, with art by Barry Smith and inks by Sal Buscema, the story follows Ka-Zar and Zabu as they race to stop the two commanders from triggering a catastrophic explosion by dropping a bomb into a volcano. The cover, penciled by Barry Smith and inked by Frank Giacoia, captures the tension of the moment.
